Overview
The Emcee, or Master of Ceremony, keeps the competition moving. Your main job is to start and end each heat at the right moment. These buttons drive the whole competition: the live screen, the Deck Captain and the Adjudicators all follow the status you set.
Important: Every button you press here directly changes the status shown on the live screen. Press a button only when it is true on the floor.
What You See
Pick a heat from the list on the left. The heats are grouped by session, such as Saturday Standard. A colored dot beside a heat shows its current status.
At the top of the page you will find:
- The heat name and its status badge, such as Created, Queued, In Progress or Completed.
- The control buttons: Queue Heat, Start Heat and End Heat. Only the buttons that apply right now are shown.
- Planned and Actual times. Actual shows "Not started" until you start the heat. It fills in when you start and end the heat.
Under the heat you will see each round with:
| Section | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Entries | Every competitor in the round, split into groups, with bib numbers and names. |
| Adjudicators | The adjudicators assigned to judge this round. |
| Round Dances | The dances in order, each with its own status, music length and fade time. |
| Additional Information | Heat groups, estimated duration, whether it is the final round, and the target number of recalls. |
The Three Buttons
| Button | What it does | Shown when the heat is |
|---|---|---|
| Queue Heat | Puts the heat on deck. | Created |
| Start Heat | Starts the heat. The next heat goes on deck. | Created or Queued |
| End Heat | Ends the heat. The next heat starts. | Queued or In Progress |
Queue Heat: put a heat on deck
Queuing a heat puts it on deck. It appears in the upcoming list on the live screen, and the Deck Captain begins lining up and checking in its competitors.
You usually do not need to queue by hand, because starting or ending a heat queues the next one for you. Use Queue Heat when you want to call a heat early.
Start Heat: the heat is on the floor
Press Start Heat when the competitors are on the floor and the heat begins. Starting a heat does two things:
- The heat becomes In Progress, and Adjudicators can start submitting marks.
- The next heat is put on deck right away, so the Deck Captain can line it up while this one dances.
End Heat: clear the floor for the next heat
Press End Heat when the heat is finished and the floor is clear. Ending a heat does two things:
- The heat becomes Completed, and its actual end time is recorded.
- The next heat starts right away, exactly as if you had pressed Start Heat on it. The heat after that goes on deck.
Note: Ending a heat does not close its rounds. Adjudicators can still submit marks for it after you end the heat, and a round that is danced over several heats keeps going. The Scrutineer finalizes the round.
A Typical Heat, Step by Step
- The current heat is In Progress. The next heat is Queued, which means it is on deck.
- When the dancing is over and the floor is clear, press End Heat.
- The next heat starts and the heat after it goes on deck. You can now call the competitors for the new heat.
- Repeat for each heat.
Because ending a heat starts the next one, in most cases you only need to press End Heat once per heat.
Rules and Limits
- Press Start Heat before End Heat. End Heat is also offered on a Queued heat, so check that the status shows In Progress before you end it.
- The "next heat" is the next one in the same session. At the end of a session, nothing follows.
- A heat that is already running or completed is not pulled back to Queued by starting or ending the heat before it.
- A skipped round, or a round with no competitors, is passed over. The rest of the heat still starts.
- Every action updates the live screen. There is no separate publish step.
